Pointers handle Fennimore to stay perfect
The Pointers scored in four different innings for the win. Liam Stumpf was the winning pitcher for the Pointers as he went the whole game, throwing seven innings, striking out nine while walking three and giving up five hits.
Four Pointer batters had multiple hits in the contest as the home team out hit the Eagles 11 to 5. Fennimore committed three errors while Mineral Point had two.
McGuire Fitzgerald started on the bump for the Eagles. Grady Gorgen started the game with a walk and scored on a double by Liam Stumpf. Justin Baehler then reached on an error that scored Stumpf. The Pointers led 2-0 after a double play got the Eagles out of a jam.
The Eagles then responded with four runs in the second. Derek Turben singled, Fifrick reached on an error, Warren Adam reached and plated a run on a fielder's choice. Following a Noah James walk, the bases would be loaded. Trent Napp struck out then Derek Kephart and Trevor Wanek both hit two out, rbi singles to take a 4-2 lead.
The Pointers took the lead back in the fourth when Curtis Cox singled then reached third on a two out double by Jaron Walrack. Grady Gorgen singled to score two and advanced to third on a fielding error.
The Pointers added more in the fifth. Baehler singled, Lindsey singled, Cox walked and pinch runner Will Strake scored on a passed ball. A fielder's choice by Ottoway would plate another one.
Stumpf settled in after the second, striking out six of his nine and allowed only a pair of hits over his final five frames. The Pointers would add another insurance run in the sixth to take the 8-4 lead. Stumpf struck out the final two batters to secure the victory.
"It was a good win for us not only as a team but as a program," said coach Jordan Tibbits. "Fennimore has had our number over the years and it was great to see some of these guys that have been in the program get a victory over them. We had one inning where things didn't really go our way but the team responded well. Liam Stumpf was terrific on the mound and the top of our lineup really hit the ball well. Grady Gorgen continues to be a great leadoff for us."
"We are at the undefeated Dodgers next Monday, at Darlington Tuesday and home vs Bellevile Thursday," said Tibbits.
