Extinction can be slowed

By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

"In nature, nothing exists alone."
- Rachel Carson, 1962
We all love our plants and animals so the question is what would we do without them?
While it might be a stretch to think the world could be without plants and animals there are some species that we might have to do without in the future.
According to those involved with Earth Day which is April 22 worldwide we humans have upset the balance of nature and the world is paying dearly for it. The world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago.
As previously stated it is our fault.
Earth Day organizers say the unprecedented global destruction and rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations are directly linked to causes driven by human activity: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, trafficking and poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and pesticides to name a few. The impacts are far reaching.
They add that if we do not act now, extinction may be our enduring legacy.
All living things have an intrinsic value, and each plays a unique role in the complex web of life. We must work together to protect endangered and threatened species: bees, coral reefs, elephants, giraffes, insects, whales and more.
There is good news, though. The rate of extinction can still be slowed if we work together.
If you are so inclined, the Earth Day Network asks people to join the Protect Our Species campaign. The movement has some great goals which include:
-Educate and raise awareness about the accelerating rate of extinction of millions of species and the causes and consequences of this phenomenon.
-Achieve major policy victories that protect broad groups of species as well as individual species and their habitats.
-Build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values.
-Encourage individual actions such as adopting plant based diet and stopping pesticide and herbicide use.
Now that you have heard this the rest is up to you.
