In the game of high school baseball sometimes it is more about playing well then actually winning a game.
That is why Barneveld coach Lance Schmitz was a happy man even after two losses to their ranked opponent, Shullsburg/Benton last Friday.
The Eagles and the Zephyrs put up plenty of zeros between them in the Six Rivers doubleheader with Shullsburg/Benton surviving both, 4-0 and 2-0. Both games were well pitched and took just over an hour to play.
"We were done by 7:30," Schmitz said. The first game went an hour and 13 minutes and the second a hour and seventeen minutes.
"Most of the time it was three up and three down," Schmitz added.
A two-out double with a runner on accounted for the two runs in the 2-0 loss. The double scored the runner then a throw on an attempt at third got by the fielder, allowing the second run.
The other game was decided by a triple with two runners on with the ball getting past the right fielder when he stumbled and rolling to the fence.
"That was the only time they touched third in the game," Schmitz said
Matt Fahey threw a three hitter in the 2-0 loss. He struck out three,
Luke Herricks and Chase Ignatius worked the 4-0 loss. Herricks went five strong and struck out five.
"They are a very good team and we went toe to toe with them," Schmitz said.
He added it was a great learning experience for his young team.
"We know where we stand now," he said. "I walked away with a big smile on my face."
With the Eagles line-up featuring only one senior starter it was good for Schmitz to see how they responded against a team with 12 seniors and eight of them start.
Monday the Eagles got past Black Hawk with an 11-0 win in five innings that featured a no hitter by Trey Gordon.
Gordon, a senior, got the first start on the mound in his career as he has been the starting catcher for the Eagles since his freshman season.
"He is one reason why our pitchers do so well," Schmitz said. "He does a good job working with them and helping them through the rough spots."
But Monday it was Gordon's turn to take the mound and he responded by allowing no hits while striking out eight which meant the Eagles only had to make seven plays on balls hit. One of them was a shot back to Gordon in the third that he turned into a double play.
Gordon also got another baserunner on a pick-off.
Fahey was one of Barneveld's hitting leaders as he went 2x3 with a double and three runs scored.
Chase Ignatius was 1x2 and scored twice.
Reece Peterson was 1x1 with a pair of rbis and two runs scored.
Isaac Baumgartner was 1x3 with two rbis.
Seth Sullivan, who is 9 for 10 lifetime against Black Hawk, was 3x3 and drove in three runs.
Rece Shelton and Jordan Stietz split the pitching for the Warriors.
"We played a pretty great game," summarized Schmitz.
