Dodgers downed by Platteville, 4th at I-G


Dodgeville's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at Platteville in SWC action Thursday and then finished in fourth place at the Iowa-Grant Tournament Saturday.
Against the Lady Hillmen scores were a lopsided: 25-12, 25-18, 25-13.
JoJo Heimerl led in assists with three while Grace Borne assisted in four points.
Lily Durst served a pair of aces and also had 11 digs.
Olivia Argall and Anna Ruhland both blocked two Platteville shots.
"We came out a little flat," said Dodger coach Scott Garthwaite. "It seemed as if we were on our heels playing defense constantly. Overall our hitters weren't aggressive enough, resulting in 17 hitting errors."
He added, "I felt we played hard but the scores weren't an indication of our effort. I know we'll play them better the next time around."
Saturday, at I-G. the Dodgers started pool play with two losses to Belleville - 25-12, 25-14.
Argall had four kills while Emma Ladd came up with five assists. Heimerl blocked one shot and Borne dug 11 balls.
"We playing them tough in game two, then they went on a 15-2 run to end the game."
They bounced back and topped Portage 2-1, losing the opener 25-19 then winning 25-17 and 25-15.
Argall had eight kills and Heimerl six while Borne had 16 assists. Anna Ruhland blocked three shots while both Borne and Argall had nine digs.
"We had great team come from behind wins as we fought back in game two and were down 14-7 before winning game three," Garthwaite said.
They finished pool play with a 2-1 win in tight games over Mineral Point.
They lost the opener 26-24 and then won 25-23 and 16-14.
Allison Esch led in kills with five while Argall, Heimerl and Ruhland all had four.
Borne assisted on 13 points while Ruhland served three aces and Durst had a dozen digs.
"It was a great match,"Garthwaite pointed out. "The teams went back and forth, but we made it a little tougher on us because of 10 missed serves. Our hitters were aggressive - the best we've seen all year."
In the semi-finals they dropped a 2-0 decision to Seneca, 25-19, 25-23.
Heimerl and Argall had six kills each and Borne assisted on 10 points.
Borne and Heimerl both aced two serves and Heimerl and Ruhland both blocked two shots.
Borne had 11 assists.
"Seneca has been traditionally a strong program with recent state appearances," Garthwaite said. "We had a chance to win both games and were very pleased with the effort."
Marshall won the consolation title 2-0 over the Dodgers, 25-13, 25-22.
Heimerl led with five kills. Borne and Ladd had five and four assists respectively. Borne, Ladd and Makayla Parkin each served an ace. Heimerl blocked to shots and Durst had six digs.
"The first game we acme out flat and had a hard time with serve receive and communication," Garthwaite said. "We regrouped and came back strong. We had a chance to win at the end, but came up just a little short."
He added," Overall, our level of play throughout the day was very high except for a couple of small lapses. I think our team is growing and getting better everyday. We have been tinkering with the lineup to see what the right combinations are. I'm very excited for the second half of the season."
