The Dodgeville Area Scholarship Foundation's annual golf outing was held Sunday in some pretty immense heat for 32 teams. That translates into 128 golfers - down a few from last year when we had 148, but still a very good turnout and event. Players ranged in ages from a few years out of high school to Bob "Ranger" McNeill, who is over 90! I got to see several people I hadn't seen in quite some time - some who have been back to play a few times. One, from the class of 1965, that I hadn't seen since probably his graduation was Bill Carley. There were several spectators who came out to watch the players go in and out of Dodge Point Country Club and to take part in the ceremonies that followed play, including the famous "pie" auction. People asked me who won. My reply was "I hope the kids!"

This coming Sunday will be the final one for "fall ball" at Centennial Park. Four high school age teams - Dodgeville, Mineral Point, Barneveld and Sluggers (Prairie du Chien, Platteville, Galena, Cuba City) - play four games, with each team playing two. They start at 9:00 a.m. and finish about 5:00 p.m. We have a concession stand running the entire time with burgers, hot dogs, brats and lots of fluids (that were needed a lot the first five weeks, especially last week). If you want to watch some present and future high school players have fun playing baseball, stop up!

The Dodgeville Chamber of Commerce is planning a "Trunk or Treat" event for Saturday, October 27. The set-up will be in the parking lot behind the courthouse and Dodgeville Chronicle with a haunted house and games being planned for the kids. There will be more coming soon on the specifics, so stay tuned to the paper!

The chamber is also starting planning for the "Home for the Holidays" event. That's another thing to keep watching for more information. That begins on Small Business Saturday, the end of November.

One of the golfers at DASFI was telling me a story about doing a bike ride. There was a fellow coming off a boat to join the ride with a recumbent bike. They struck up a conversation and asked where the fellow was from. To his amazement, the fellow said he was from southwestern Wisconsin. The answer was "So am I." That fellow was none other than "my late buddy" Mike Crubaugh!

I told that fellow - "The older you get, the more you find out just how small the world is!"
