Seven points
That is what a touchdown and an extra point kick counts as.
But River Valley junior Cayden Robson accumulated that total in a different way. The kicker for the Blackhawks kick a field goal from 21 yards away in the third quarter Friday and added four extra point kicks. That totaled his seven.
A kicker who is accurate is a good thing to have and River Valley coach Tim Eastlick feels the team has found the right person to fill that roll in Robson.
"Cayden Robson has been very solid in our kicking game," said Eastlick. "He has taken on the role as our kick-off, extra point and field goal guy. He has added consistency that is really a luxury to have at the high school level."
Robson's foot went well with the two touchdowns senior running back Shane Liegel scored in a 31-0 win over Dodgeville Friday night. Sophomore quarterback Will Bailey helped account for the other two as he nailed fellow sophomore Tyler Nachreiner with a 16 yarder for a score then took one in himself from 13 yards out.
The rest of the night was turned over to the River Valley defense which limited the Dodgers to 53 total yards---29 passing and 24 rushing.
Liegel and Brock Mahoney had the most tackles for the Hawks with 11 and seven. Kelby Prochaska, another sophomore, had an interception.
The Dodgers tested the Hawks defensively a couple times but the defense came up with the answer.
"Defensively our kids really did a nice job following the game plan coming into the game," Eastlick said. "We were able to stop ball carriers and rally to the ball very well."
Ball carrying responsibilities were spread around with Bailey getting 61 in eight carries, Liegel 50 in 10 tries and Roman Jensen added 25 on five trips. The output by Liegel was especially satisfying to Eastlick.
"Shane is finally healthy for probably the first time this season," the coach said. "He is a player we depend on not only in the run game but also as a blocker in our passing game."
With a lot of underclassmen seeing extended action and playing key roles for the Blackhawks Eastlick is pleased with the progress the team has made in becoming a complete unit.
"Our young team is getting closer to where we want to be as they have improved throughout the season," Eastlick said. "The biggest thing we are looking for is consistency in our performance and mental preparation every week."
Bailey's quarterback play is one reason for the improved play. He completed nine passes Friday on 22 attempts for 130 yards. Nachreiner caught four for 46 yards, Josh Maier three for 41, Will Jewell one for 20 and Dylan Thielman one for 23.
Bailey guided the Hawks to 260 total yards.
Joey Recob gained 19 yards for the Dodgers on four carries and quarterback Mike Mikrut got eight on nine runs. RJ Veinberg added eight on five tries and Wiley Hilst picked up eight on eight attempts.
Mikrut completed two passes, a 20 yarder to Anthony Vivian and a nine yard strike to Jacob Buchanan.
Both teams are away in SWC action Friday with the Hawks at Richland Center and the Dodgers at Platteville. The Dodgers need to win out to be playoff eligible and the Hawks need one more to qualify.
"Richland Center is next and like every team in our league you can't sleep on them," Eastlick said. "They are an improved group and will provide challenges for us."
