Defense keys win by Pointer girls at RV

Mineral Point's girls basketball team knows about limits after their 66-39 win over River Valley in a non-conference game last Tuesday.
They limited the Blackhawks to 17 first half points while scoring 39 with much of them in transition.
"We used great team defense to get out to a strong start and early lead," said first year Pointer head coach Matt Austin. "We were led by senior guard McKenna Reichling who had 18 points, six assists, eight rebounds, and six steals. We also limited turnovers to six for the night against a physical River Valley team."
Reichling, a four year member of the varsity for the Pointers used that experience to provide both scoring and leadership. Nicole Johnson, a 6-0 junior, added nine points to Mineral Point's attack and Morgan James, a 5-10 senior, scored eight. The Pointers were able to get 11 girls into the scoring column
Senior Emily Briehl led River Valley's scoring with 14 points and junior Ali Hoffman put in 11.
"We played hard and competed," said River Valley coach Brent Johnson. "We didn't fall apart. Physically we had a good night. Mentally not so much. We missed free throws (10/21) and turnovers did us in."
Johnson said the Pointers are a very good team and should be a force in the SWAL.
"They have a lot of girls who can score," he said.
Johnson said the Blackhawks were within three points when there was confusion about who should take the ball out of bounds and his team lost a possession. The Pointers capitalized with a three pointer that made the score 14-8, then they turned a RV turnover into a basket and the lead grew to 16-8. It was all downhill from there.
The Blackhawks open SWC play Friday when they entertain Prairie du Chien.
