Panthers fall short in comeback try

Six girls scored in the first half to help Shullsburg to a 33-14 halftime lead but the Miners spent the second half holding off a fierce Iowa-Grant comeback.
The Panthers outscored the Miners 28-20 the second half and cut the lead to seven near the end before falling by 11, 53-42.
Kayla Klotz, a 6-0 sophomore, kept the Miners alive the second half with 10 of her 12 points and half of her team's second half total. Layla Alt, who led the Miners with 16, added seven. Megan Greenfield also had double figures for the Miners with 12.
Panther coach Dan Liddicoat tried a man to man to start the game but the girls had problems with the Miners' height. A switch to zone the second half helped get the Panthers back into the game.
"The girls played very hard to get back in it," he said. "I was proud of their effort."
It was also a tough start for the Panthers who missed seven layups the first half. Only three girls were able to find the basket with Annie Spurley leading with 19 and Olivia Liddicoat netting 16. Sophomore Logan Hubbard finished out the scoring for the Panthers with seven.
"I was impressed with how we fought tonight in the second half," said Liddicoat. "The girls gave it all they had."
The Panthers are at Pecatonica Monday and host Fennimore in their SWAL opener Friday.
