Panther girls drop opener to Arrows

Lancaster senior Lydia Murphy showed the Iowa-Grant girls basketball team she not only can run cross country, but she can also play basketball.
Murphy, who was the 13th fastest D3 girl at state last fall, poured in 22 points Monday night as her Flying Arrows spoiled the Panthers season opener 62-40 in a non-conference contest.
Iowa-Grant kept the game close in the first half, but Lancaster pulled away before intermission to a 15 point lead at 36-21.
"We came out in a man defense in the second half and it worked for awhile," said IG coach Dan Liddicoat.
They got the margin down to seven.
"But their pressure got to us and we had too many turnovers," he added.
"Lancaster already had a game under their belt beating Southwestern," Liddicoat said. "We scouted them and the Wagner girl had 21. We held her to seven, but Murphy was hot tonight." She had 13 of her 22 in the second half.
Kiley Kelly, a sophomore, added 19 for the Arrows.
The Panthers were led in scoring by Logan Hubbard, who scored 17 points. She's new to the school, transferring in from Minnesota with her mother Stephanie, who is the new school superintendent.
Olivia Liddicoat was the other Panther to hit in double figures with 11.
"We're young with no seniors on the roster," coach Liddicoat pointed out. "We had a good night in several aspects. I'm optimistic."
