Weber hits for cycle as Dodgers outlast RC


Dodgeville's high school baseball team has been working on improving its hitting approach and that work paid off in a big way Tuesday.
The Dodgers outslugged Richland Center 16-11 in the second SWC meeting between the two squads this season and avenged a 5-4 extra inning loss earlier, Senior center fielder Zack Weber led the surge and became the first Dodger to hit for the cycle since varsity assistant coach Ryan Reilly did it in the mid 1990s. Weber singled in a run in the four run first, tripled in a pair of runs in the second, double for another run in the third then sent to ball screaming over the fence in left field to plate two more runs in the fourth. He finished with six rbis.
Josh Gorgen was 3x4 with an rbi. Anthony Vivian went 2x2 with a double and drove in a run. He was hit by a pitch twice.
JJ Thompson was 2x4 and drove in a run. Tanner Bockhop was 2x3 with a double and Shelby Jones was 2x3 with a double and drove a run with a sac fly.
Mike Mikrut had a triple and an rbi in the second,
The Dodgers scored four in the first, nine in the second and three in the fourth.
Brandon Molldrem took the mound and earned the win with four innings of work. He fanned three, walked four and gave up six hits that produced six runs, four earned.
Bockhop pitched the last three, striking out three and giving up five runs of which none were earned.
Richland Center would not go away. They scored one in the first, two in the second, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the seventh. Logan Morris took the loss for the Hornets.
The win marked the second for the Dodgers in SWC play this season. They are 6-7 overall.
The Dodgers head to Prairie du Chien Friday and to Sauk Prairie Saturday.
