Suicide calls for more than words

By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

When someone ends their life people talk about it. Unfortunately it usually takes the death of a famous person to generate the talk.
This past week Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain took their lives and for several days the media covered how equally famous people were reacting. It only takes a few days before what people are talking about changes to something else.
While it is good to talk about issues more often than not it stops with that....just talk.
Like a lot of areas of mental health no one really understands why someone ends their life. In a lot of ways it is becoming a crisis in our country and is certainly a devastation for the families and others who are close.
There is an active suicide prevention awareness group in Iowa County that is doing everything possible to call attention to problem. It is named Suicide Prevention Coalition of Iowa County Wisconsin. If you are reading this you have probably heard about them as we cover them often in this newspaper.
We could talk about suicide and fill the entire paper. We could discuss the signs, the importance of knowing what to look for and where to find help but we want this to be more than about words.
Attend a coalition meeting or request information that you can have on hand. Learn all you can about helping someone who feels suicide is the only thing left for them.
Here is some contact information.
