Two Dodge-Point relay teams gain podium at state track

Dodgeville-Mineral Point's boys 4x400 relay team finished fourth and set a school record and the 4x800 relay team took fifth, running their best time of the year. That gave the D-P team nine points and 25th place in Division 2 at the WIAA State Track & Field championships in La Crosse last weekend.
The 4x400 team, comprised of senior John Phelan, junior Kevin Eisenzimmer, senior Josh Shepler and senior Isaac Grunow ran a 3:24.90 final after qualifying at 3:26.35.
Clinton, who qualified seventh, won at 3:22.58 with Lodi runner-up in 3:23.31. Aquinas took third in 3:23.86.
The 4x800 team of senior Gerrit Bakker, sophomore Henry Keith, sophomore Peyton Tranel and senior Isaac Grunow captured fifth in 8:06.35.
Lodi won in 7:58.34 with Lakeland Union next in 7:59.95.
Monroe took third in 8:00.01 and Kohler/Sheboygan County Christ-ian was fourth in 8:02.94.
Bakker was Dodge-Point's lone individual competitor as he qualified in the 800 meters. His state time of 1:59.18 placed him ninth, just out of scoring team points.
Lodi senior Tanner Maier won in 1:55.18.
Rice Lake won D2 men with 53 points while Lodi was second at 48.
"We (coaching staff) were pretty darn happy. Not often do you take that many kids up there and everybody comes home with a State medal," said Dodge-Point coach Joe Hanson. "It is alway a good sign when the athletes run their best times when it counts the most. That's what happened in La Crosse."
He added, "That 4x400 record was a tough one to break so congrats to those four young men. The 4x800 wasn't a school record but it was their best time all season."
"We're very proud of these kids," Hanson concluded.
