Let's Appreciate June Dairy Month for what it is

By Kasi Greenwood-kgreenwood@thedodgevillechronicle.com

According to the Dairy Alliance website, June became the "official" dairy month in 1939.
At the Iowa County Dairy Breakfast in Avoca this weekend, I had the opportunity to visit the cows in the free stall barn. Another thing I thought was great were the fact signs displayed there. One fact sign, dubbed "Cowsta Rica" said that the cows relax 21 hours a day, where they have constant access to feed, water, and their favorite brushes. All I could think to myself was "man they really are comfortable."
The Miller family has a lot to be proud of. They pulled off a great event and had many activities take place. One thing that I would like to point out is Dairy Breakfasts are vital parts of a community as they help explain day-to-day operations of a dairy farm. But they only paint a small picture.
Dairy farmers are struggling right now, and it's important that we continue to support those that put food on our table. When you make that next trip to your local grocery store, your purchase of dairy products help keep an economy going and supports a great agricultural industry.
This weekend was what a dairy breakfast should be. Kudos to Miller Time Farms.
