Pointer wrestlers handle CC/SW/B
Mineral Point's wrestling team went against the Cuba City/Southwestern/Benton Cubans and finished strong with a 54-27 win in SWAL dual meet action Friday night.
Friday night's competition started with a close match, just fell short, for Daniel Nordstrom. It soon followed with a solid pin by Kyle Vondran, who wrestled for Mineral Point at 182. Pointer wrestler Riley Workman echoed Vondran with a first period pin in the 195-weight bracket.
After a forfeit at 220, MP's Garrett Ward just came short, after falling to Cuba City's Francisco Garcia.
"We just have to learn, in those situations, that we can't panic," Coach Schmitz said.
After Mineral Point received three forfeits, Mineral Point created a "trifecta" of solid pins made by Caden Carey, Mitchell Schaaf, and Logan Schmitz.
Another exciting match was MP's Mason Hughes wrestling at 160.
"He pulled out a close match," Schmitz said. "Right at the end he gave himself the best chance to win. We talked about always giving ourselves a chance to win. He just came up short, but he wrestled well."
"I think we are getting better, and that's what we try to do each week," Schmitz said.
On Thursday, January 18, Mineral Point has a new dual matched scheduled against Pecatonica-Argyle at Argyle.
"Pec-Argyle is a team we've never faced before, and it will be a good test for us," Schmitz said.
