Pointers edged twice in tourney

When you play tough competition you want to be competitive even if you don't win the game.
The Mineral Point boys basketball played two pretty good teams in Glendale Martin Luther and Manitowoc Roncalli at the Rick Majerus WBBY Shootout at Concordia University in Mequon.
They dropped both games by five points each, losing to Martin Luther 73-68 and then to Roncalli 70-65.
"It was really good competition and a great tournament to be a part of," said Pointer coach Dan Burresson. "It would have been better had the outcome been different but hopefully the level of competition and playing in a couple close games will help us going forward."
The Pointers had to basically play catch up ball against Martin Luther in their opener Wednesday.
They trailed 38-30 at the half as Martin Luther's Ace Evans hit 11 of his 13 points in that first half.
They chipped away and had a chance to tie, but couldn't quite get over the hump.
Wesley Berget scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half. Isaac Lindsey also had 12 of his 19 at that same time.
Brayden Dailey added 13 with Chance Wendhausen hitting 10.
"Against Martin Luther I was really proud of how we battled back. We got down 15 at one point, but had three pretty good looks to tie late," the coach said. "We kind of let them be the aggressor early on. As the game went on I thought we moved the ball pretty well and the guys made some good adjustments on the defensive end."
Martin Luther's Ki-Anthony Blake led their scoring with 19 points. Besides Evans' 13, Gabe Mack-Roundtree also hit that number. Xavier Jones added 10.

In the Roncalli game the Pointers didn't try to play catch up, they tried to hold on.
They led 34-32 at the intermission, but fell victim to Josh Koss and his three point accuracy.
All the Roncalli sharpshooter did was bury six three pointers with four coming in the second half - one they won 38-31. They had 12 three pointers on the day.
He finished with 21 points as did teammate Mitchell Schneider. Chamnila Lambert added 10.
The Pointers were led by Lindsey with 18 points. Chance Wendhausen hit 14 while Brayden Dailey chipped in 12.
Burreson talked about the game saying., "Against Roncalli we lead most of the way, but they hit shots and made free throws down the stretch. Again I thought we did some really good things at times on the defensive end. We just need to do a better job on the offensive end at times. It was one of those games where a bounce here or there late and the outcome would have been different. We need to make sure we are doing things consistently so it doesn't come down to that."
