Regional wrestling action finds 23 area wrestlers head to sectionals

River Valley advances 7, Dodgers 4 to sectional
Dodgeville senior heavyweight Shelby Jones won the 285 lb. regional title Saturday at Prairie du Chien. The Dodgers will send four to the Richland Center Sectional Saturday.
Joining him as runners-up are: 145 lb. Riley Crook, 160 lb. John Phelan and 170 lb. Joey Recob.
Dodger senior 182 lb. Zack Weber injured his knee during his fist match, but came back to win his next one with a quick pin and finish third. He couldn't even get down into the referee's position to start a period in his match for second. If there was such a thing, he would've been given the meet's courage award.
"Although I thought we could have qualified a couple of more to sectionals, I thought we wrestled fairly well on Saturday," Dodger coach Ryan Lod said. "Riley, John and Joey each qualified to the Sectional tournament with second place finishes, while Shelby finished as a Regional champ.
He added, "Riley and John each lost matches that were extremely close throughout the match and we're looking forward to potential re-matches next week. John looked impressive on his feet and with some fine tuning on the mat, he will be hard to stop in the next two weeks. Shelby continued to wrestle extremely well. He keeps great position and controls the action in each match."
"It's always tough during the tournament series to see seasons and careers come to an end. Noah and Zack have been key contributors to the Dodger wrestling program for the past four years. They're each hard working and high character kids and it's tough to see their seasons and careers end," Lord said abouy ywo graduating seniors. Noah lost a tough match in the semi-finals and Zack suffered a sprained MCL in the semis. He continued to wrestle the rest of the day and showed a lot of grit and desire in attempting to wrestle, but the injury was too much to overcome. Although it's tough to have Noah and Zack's seasons come to an end, each had extremely successful careers as Dodger Wrestlers and they were each a joy to coach."
River Valley's unbeaten Shane Liegel won the title at 170 while once beaten Zach Licht won at 126.
Also claiming championships were: 120 lb. Caleb Radtke and 132 lb. Devan Alt.
Three Blackhawks will go as runners-up as 106 lb. Jimmy Jennings, 113 lb. Keeghan Kjos and 195 lb. Brock Mahoney each finished second.
"I thought overall our guys wrestled well.," River Valley co-coach Pat Mahoney said. "We were much more aggressive than previous matches and showed a lot of fire."
He added, "Regional is always tough. We knew Prairie would be hard to beat especially when they have 14 guys and we have 12."
"We are disappointed that everyone didn't make it to sectionals. But we now have to focus on helping our seven qualifiers wrestle well this weekend," he concluded.
Prairie du Chien won the team title with 249 points to River Valley's 191. Dodgeville took third at 170.

Pointers advance 4, Iowa-Grant/Highland 3
Mineral Point qualified four and Iowa-Grant/Highland three to sectional wrestling Saturday at the Mineral Point Sectional.
But it was Fennimore that ran away with the team championship 255.5 to runner-up Lancaster's 198.
The Golden Eagles qualified 10 of their 14 wrestlers for sectional action with seven being champions.
Mineral Point qualified champions Logan Schmitz at 138 and Riley Workman at 170. They had seconds from 126 lb. Danny Schmitz and Caden Carey at 132.
As a team, they finished fourth with 161 points.
Both Nolan Springer and Mitchell Schaaf moved up in their weight brackets-Springer moving up to 145, and Schaaf moving up to 152. While they had solid, tough matches, they just came up short and finished third in their brackets.
"Guys moved around and that's the nature of the beast, when you get to this time " Coach Scott Schmitz said. "The guys go to where they think they can wrestle the best."
"There were also great efforts from Chandler Workman, Wyatt Evans, Garrett Ward, Kyle Vondran, and Mason Hughes," he added
"Everybody that wrestled today scored points for us," Schmitz also said. "That's what we need out of a team. We were short three guys and that really hurts in a tournament like this."
Schmitz felt that it was a great day at Lancaster and continues high hopes for all of Mineral Point's wrestlers.
"Sure, we would like to get a little more guys to the sectional tournament, but we are in a tough regionals," Schmitz said. "All we can do is learn from this."
He also pointed out, "The kids who aren't wrestling next week can use this as motivation to get better for next year. The four that made it through just need to keep plugging away for the state tournament. "
Iowa-Grant/Highland will send champions Max Maylor at 160 and Brady Peat at 182 along with 152 lb. runner-up Clayton Kite.
Maylor has just one loss on the season.
Iowa-Grant/Highland was fifth as a team with 154.5 points.
Iowa-Grant/Highland coach Ryan Allen talked abou this wrestlers: "We didnt have our best day on Saturday. I thought after last weekend, we would be able to keep our momentum going and do some damage but it didn't happen.
"We just didn't do enough to beat some of these guys ranked guys ahead of us. Granted it was a stacked regional, but we knew that going into it. We knew that it was going to take everything we had and more to win some of those matches and we didn't do that.
"Zimmer lost 2-0 in the semis and did a good job coming back to get third. He is a Jr. and will need to use that loss as motivation for next year. I thought Zim had a great year and he will be a leader for us next year.
"Noah also lost in the semis and did a nice job coming back for third. He is a senior and we will miss having him in the lineup next year.
"Sedbrook ended up 5th. He didn't really get into his scoring positions first round and got beat but he ended his season at 20-20. Jason has a great work ethic and next year I expect big things from him.
"Kite had a nice pin in the semis over a tough kid, then got beat in the finals, but won his wrestleback to make it to sectionals. The finals match wasn't his best match ever, but he may get another chance at him next week.
"Max won his bracket and looked very dominating. He just needs to stay focused and wrestle one match at a time for next week.
"Brady also looked very solid this weekend in getting a major in the finals over a highly ranked opponent. He also needs to take it one match at a time this week.
"Drew did everything he could on Saturday but just could not overcome a severe knee injury. It was hard to watch as he had only lost twice this year before the injury and had a very good season going. I'm super proud of the way Drew did everything he could to make it out of that tournament. Luckily he is only a junior and can hopefully heal up and get back at it next year.
"Clint has been having shoulder issues all year and did his best this weekend. He is another senior and his leadership will be missed. Clint came to every practice this year, even when he wasnt able to wrestle.
"Andrew, Matthew, and Keegan all did a great job this year working hard and fighting for thier team. Next year our team will need these three to step it up a notch and become leaders. It will start this summer for them and I know they can do it."
