The Mineral Point Wrestlers took on Ithaca-Weston and came away with a big win, with a final score of 65-9.
"I told the guys while watching them warm up, I didn't think they were in great shape," Pointer head coach Scott Schmitz said. "We had to get on them really early."
Pointer 182 pounder Kyle Vondra took Schmitz's message to heart, and came ahead with a six point win.
"It got the momentum going for us," Schmitz said.
Pointer Daniel Nordstrom battled a hard match, but after a tough match just came up short.
"He gave up just a decision, so that's kind of a win for us," Schmitz said.
With Mason Horn bringing a forfeit for Point at 220, the match continued with Mineral Point's Heavyweight Garrett Ward earning a pin, adding six points to Mineral Point's scoreboard.
"Garrett battled and forced his kid to make a mistake, caught him and get a pin for us," Schmitz said.
There were four consecutive forfeits, causing a lull in the match then continuing back into action with Pointer 132 pounder Danny Pittz coming away with a pin against Ithaca
"I wanted Danny to get out there and get after it right away, so that's why we let him go, took him down, and let him go," Schmitz said. "I kind of noticed his opponent reaching, so that's why I told Danny to run out front in the second period and see what happens."
By doing that, Pittz was able to catch his opponent and bring him into a pin.
"That's what we need out of Danny, to do that on his own," Schmitz said with confidence in Pittz. "He doesn't need me to tell him that."
Point's 138 pounder Caden Carey came back from an injury last week, and finished a solid match against Ithaca.
"Hopefully that helps going into Badger State this weekend," Schmitz said.
Point's 145 pounder Kane Gunderson was right where he needed to be in his match. However, scrambling mode caused Gunderson to be put in a situation where being caught and put to his back.
"He just got caught, and that happens so we just need to come back from that," Schmitz said.
Senior Pointer Logan Schmitz earned his 100th career win, with a technical fall against his opponent, which prompted the Pointer crowd to raise the "100" sign salute that's popular at many wrestling matches.
"That's a pretty big accomplishment for a high school wrestler," Schmitz said.
Mineral Point's 160 pounder Nolan Springer finished well, along with Pointer 170 pounder Mason Hughes who scored against the Ithaca wrestler that defeated him last year.
"He got a little revenge there, and that's a big confidence builder for Mason as we go into Badger State Tournament," Schmitz said.
