Powerful Fennimore too much for I-G/H

By Abigail Ruckdashel
The Iowa-Grant/Highland Panthers took on conference foe the Fennimore Golden Eagles at Iowa-Grant High School on Friday, December 21.
The Golden Eagles are the defending state champions and proved to be such taking down the Panthers 60-18. The Panthers did record four wins in the dual, two of which came by pin.
"We talked about how they're a really good team. They have a lot of upperclassmen that have been around the block that know how it works, while we've got a young team." I-G/H Coach Ryan Allen said. "We still tried to get in their head a little bit and win the small battles. Win a hand fight, win a battle on the edge of the mat, win the scramble at the end of the period, if you get a takedown you start to put a little doubt in their head. "It didn't necessarily happen that way, but that's how we went about it. "
Fennimore started the dual with a 30 point streak when Iowa-Grant forfeited 152 and 182 lbs. They also picked up pins at 160, 170 and 195 lbs.
Drew Hennessey grabbed the first win when he beat Aaron Ragels 8-3 bringing the score to 3-30. The Golden Eagles would pick up six more with a pin at 285 lbs. Iowa-Grant/Highland would stay in the dual as Fennimore would then forfeit 106 and 113 lbs to the Panthers. This made the score 15-36 with five more matches to go.
The next five matches were again swept by Fennimore when they picked up five pins/forfeits in a row. Cal Dorota earned the final three points for Iowa-Grant/Highland when he picked up a 9-3 decision in the closing 145 lbs match bringing the final match score to 60-18.
"They're really good. They're strong. They've been doing it for a while. It was good for us to see those teams, and hopefully someday that's where we will be with these younger guys," Coach Allen said.
