It was a night when both Dodgeville and River Valley fans were treated to a three point shooting display by Dodger senior Adam Phillips, but in the end The Blackhawks prevailed 72-71 in overtime.
Phillips fired from long range (well beyond the three point line) and made 13. He rarely missed and finished the night with 45 points, the most ever by a Dodger in both categories.
He hit a three to open overtime play and the Dodgers held a 71-70 lead with 2.7 seconds remaining.
That when River Valley coach Luke Thatcher called a time-out and set up an inbound play. The attempted pass was batted into the stands by Dodger defender Brandon Molldrem.
Thatcher called another time-out and this time, with three players heading toward the half court spot when the inbound pass was coming from, the pass just went over the Dodger defender's fingertips and found Blackhawk Josh Maier who put it in for a buzzer-beating layup and the win.
The regulation part of the game had its moments too. River Valley held a 38-28 lead at halftime and stretched it to11 several times.Each time, however, the Dodgers would get it back down to four. Then they finally got it down to three when senior guard Noah Blalock nailed a three to tie it at 64 before the final buzzer sounded in regulation.
That set the stage for the exciting ending.
"With six seconds left we had the lead and fouled on a three point shot. He only made one of the three, but we can't do that," said Dodgeville coach Matt McGraw.
"For us, with those six seconds left, everything that could go wrong did and, for them, everything went right," he added.
In talking about Phillips' night, the coach said, "Adam was unbelievable. And he wasn't just shooting from the three point line. He was way back from it. Also, the team recognized he was hot and did a good job of getting the ball to him."
McGraw went on saying, "Credit Luke (River Valley coach). He set up a great play that was better than our defense."
Besides Phillips hitting in double figures, Molldrem, the Dodger post player, netted 14.
"Brandon has really good footwork," McGraw said."He utilized it well tonight."
River Valley was led in scoring by the 6'4" Maier, who scored 24 points,
Will Jewell added 11 and Conner Mickelson put in 10.
Thatcher said about the game's ending play, "We drew up a play for the back door. That is the second time it worked for a win for us. Maier has the wing span and is very athletic."
He said he wasn't happy with what he felt his team's decision making of playing not to lose rather than to win.
In talking about Phillips he said,"That was one of the best shooting performances by a high school player that I have ever seen. Credit coach McGraw and his staff for getting his team ready to play." Thatcher concluded by saying, "But it was a great win for us."
