Dodgers loses tough dual match against PDC, place 10th at invite

By Kasi Greenwood
Dodgeville wrestling head coach Ryan Lord knew that Thursday's match would be a tough one, as they hosted #5 ranked Prairie Du Chien. Not only were there some tough opponents, but progress reports were also another decision maker that didn't work in the Dodger team's favor.
"We were missing some kids due to grades," Lord said. "Progress reports came out this week, and unfortunately we had a few that fell victim to it. They kind of put themselves in that situation, and they have to work out of it."
Sickness kept both Dodgers Tyler and Tanner Bell out of the match.
"I felt good about their chances in winning, they're both tough and they've been wrestling great," Lord said. "It was tough not having them there."
Despite sickness and progress reports, Lord still had confidence in his wrestling team.
"We were wrestling some of the best kids in the state," said Lord. "I know Louden (285) is capable of beating the kid he went against."
It was the same type of situation for 120 pounder Drew Palmer after his loss against Prairie Du Chien's Chase Fisher.
Lord said, "Drew wrestled well, but I think rather than just going after that win, he was wanting to hold on for a win and thats when it catches up to you."
The Dodgers travelled to Mount Horeb for the Mount Horeb Varsity Wrestling Invitational during the weekend.
"It's a nice tournament," Lord said. "Some of the same teams are there from last year, but there are some different teams this year."
Sickness unfortunately continued into the weekend, as Tyler and Tanner Bell along with Eli Reeson were all down with the flu, and Mason Mortimer had an injury that took him out of the invite.
Success came through for the Dodgers when 195 pounder Joey Recob pinned his way to a champion title, and also receiving his 100th career win.
"Joey has alway been tough in the top position, but he has really shown tremendous improvement on his feet this season," Lord said.
Other wrestlers had good outcomes during the invitational.
"Drew Palmer lost his quarterfinal match to the number one seed, but really wrestled well in the wrestle backs to place 5th," Lord said. "Riley Crook and Louden Fuerstenberg also each placed 4th."
The Dodgers have a break from dual meets for about a week, and will step back onto the Mat as they travel to LaCrosse for the Bi-State Tournament December 28.
