St. Nicholas explained

Dear Editor;
The following is as true today as when it appeared in St. Joseph's Parish bulletin December 4, 2005.
St. Nicholas was actually a bishop in the 4th century.
He was born in Patara; and as a layman became Bishop of Myra. His holiness and generosity were legendary and many stories of his goodness were passed on after his death, at times embellished by overly-enthusiastic supporters and admirers.
Through a series of historical twists and turns, the beloved figure of Sant Claus was based on him.
What makes St. Nicholas even more interesting is that he is the patron of many different groups of people including pharmacists, firemen, newlyweds, poets, and many more.
He is recognized around the world and is indeed one of the most popular and well known saints, rivaling even St. Peter.
His feast is celebrated on December 6.
