Remembering Clay Schoenfeld

Dear Editor;
Thanks for the "Memories of Clay Schoenfeld" story published in the Nov. 29 Chronicle. I met Clay late in his life and always wished I had known him earlier. When I was a publisher at a national, higher education newsletter company, he responded to an announcement for a freelance writer. At an age when others had retired, Clay quickly became an integral member of our editorial team, tackling assignments and offering his wisdom gained from long experience.
I suppose he was a great man; I more often thought of him as generous and kind, desiring to be of service always. After my husband and I moved to Iowa County, Clay and I talked about how to drive into Madison using primarily back roads, the rural seasons, and the wonderful sweet corn at Peck's farm market. To me, Clay was direct, an unafraid journalist, and supremely honorable. Thank you for the welcome reminder.
