Big plays costly to Dodgers at Prairie du Chien

A scoreless first quarter can go one of two ways....either both teams will go at each other, locked in a grind it out battle or one team can explode.
Unfortunately for the Dodgeville football team it was Prairie du Chien who ignited their powder and scored huge in the middle two quarters and translate that into a 41-8 win. It was the SWC opener for both teams.
The Blackhawks put 21 points on the board the second quarter and 20 in the third for their winning total.
The Dodgers got their taste of scoring when senior back Zack Weber found a seam and raced 67 yards to score. Weber also added the conversion on a pass from David McGuire.
Weber was a bright spot for the Dodgers with 117 yards gained on 11 carries, a 10.6 per lug average.
Gavin Gillitzer scored three touchdowns for the Blackhawks. His first score came on a two yard run at the 11:55 mark of the second quarter.
Tyler Smock then put up a pair of scores, returning a punt 21 yards and a seven yard run. Extra points by Cory Check made it 21-0 at halftime.
The PdC duo kept on running the third quarter and finding the end zone. Gillitzer scored on runs of 67 and 14 yards and Smock finished it off with a 67 yard gallop.
Check and Colten Wall kicked an extra point each.
Dodgeville's rushing total was 100 yards on 33 attempts. McGuire completed five of 17 passes for 30 yards and was intercepted twice.
Defensively the Dodgers were led in tackles by Weber with 12, Jonathan Geisking 11 and Joey Recob 10.
Dodgeville coach Josh Busch felt the problem of not being able to move the football eventually caught up to the Dodgers.
"In the first quarter our defense did a nice job of containing the PDC offense, but our offense could not move the ball," Busch said. "In the second quarter PDC got a couple big plays and put the ball in the end zone and then returned a punt for a touchdown that put the them up 21 before the half. Our defense did what they could, but our lack of offense really was the issue."
It was a tough match-up for the Dodgers as the Hawks had size and speed which created some problems in the open field.
'We had some issues with guys being out of position and also with making tackles when we had the opportunity," Busch said. "PDC is very fast though, on both sides of the ball and that gave us problems all night."
It was hard to generate much against the Hawk's defense.
"PDC was fast on defense," Busch said. "They blitz on just about every down and always from a different spot. We struggled to pick up the blitz, and for the most part that was the biggest problem that they gave us."
Busch felt a couple seniors stepped up for the Dodgers.
"Zack (Weber) had been pretty consistent for us all year," Busch said. "Shelby Jones also did a nice job for us. He was playing through some tough emotions and the coaching staff really respects him for doing that. "
(Shelby's grandfather passed away earlier in the day.)
The Dodgers have River Valley here Friday in a game that challenges both 0-1 teams.
"The focus this week is the next game," Busch said. "We move on from PDC and get ready for RV. This is going to be another game that if we are able to play the way we are capable we will give ourselves a chance. These kids are a tough group and I think they will be ready for the challenge."
