Back to school tips for getting back to nature
By Sarah Pearce-
Even the most eager students can sometimes find themselves feeling a bit squirrely by the end of a long school day. Kids work hard all day long to not only pay attention and learn, but also to control themselves physically, emotionally and socially.
As research shows, giving kids the opportunity for free play outside helps release bottled up energy and emotion and allow children the time and space to process the challenges of their day. This leads to positive outcomes for behavior and helps kids adapt to new routines and expectations.
Consider leaving time in your child's day for this worthwhile endeavor - allow them some time to sit quietly and observe the subtle changes of the season. Giving them the freedom to explore and play for a few minutes each day will help everyone as you settle back into the busy routines of a new school year.
There is often no need to look further than your own yard as a place for free play. However, if your family is looking to explore the Driftless Area, here are a few places to consider:
-Governor Dodge State Park; County Recreation and Prairie Restoration Area (Iowa County Farm);
-Erickson Conservation Area in Argyle;
-Black Hawk Lake Recreation Area;
-Your local park.
