Panthers find the holes against Southwestern

With a pair of turf pounding running backs picking their way through holes created by a determined line, the Iowa-Grant football team rolled to a 42-6 win over Southwestern in the second week of SWAL play.
A 21 point second quarter was the difference maker as the Panthers put points on the board in every frame. Brady Peat scored twice with Clayton Kite and Matthew Winders getting into the end zone on running plays. Ross Havlik passed to Michael Winders for a score through the air with an unexpected but huge score coming on a recovered fumble which Clint Havlik snared and took across the goal line to get the second period untracked.
Sophomore Breckin Schneider clicked off the final four yards of a late in the game drive for the only score by the Wildcats.
The Panthers bruised their way for 332 yards on the ground, led by Peat's 236 on 16 carries and 52 more from Kite on eight attempts.
Peat scored in the last minute of the first quarter from three yards out then 10 seconds into the second quarter Clint Havlik captured the Southwestern fumble and scored.
Coach Gary Allen said the fumble recovery was a big play at the time for the Panthers.
"We turned the ball over on our first possession so when our defense forced the fumble and Clint got the ball for the touchdown it was huge for the team," Allen said.
The Panthers finished off the second quarter with touchdowns by Kite on a 20 yard burst and Peat who sprung loose for a 73 yard scamper. That made it 29-0 at the half.
Ross Havlik and Michael Winders combined for a third period pass play from 10 yards out that ended up in the end zone. Matthew Winders blasted in from the two for the final Panther points with three minutes gone in the final frame.
The Panther offensive line played big into the success for the evening, opening holes for the running backs and giving Ross Havlik time to complete three of five passes for 52 yards and a score.
"Our offensive line, Clint Havlik, Jackson Vigen, Nathan Daniels, Brandon Graul, and Parker Velte, along with our tight end Keaton Durni, really stepped it up with in practice this week and it paid off in the game," Allen said. "They gave our backs room and Brady and Clayton made the most of it."
The backfield duo also played into creating room for each other to run.
"Brady and Clayton ran very hard and just as importantly, blocked hard for each other," said Allen.
In last week's loss to Fennimore Allen was not pleased with how the special teams performed so the goal this week was to remedy that.
"We put extra work on special teams this week and it showed," Allen said. "The kids executed things better this week and Jackson Vigen had some good kicks."
Next up for the Panthers is a trip to Boscobel to take on the improved Bulldogs.
"Boscobel is a physical team that plays hard," said Allen. "We will need to play well."
The Panthers are currently 4-1, 1-1 in the SWAL.
