Panthers fall in two tough matches

Iowa-Grant's volleyball team was able to play with two of the SWAL's powers but couldn't get past Cuba City or Darlington.
The Cubans pulled off a sweep last Tuesday winning 25-22, 25-19 and 25-13.yuh
The Panthers got out of the blocks strong and forged an 8-2 lead, eventually turning that into a 17-11 advantage later in the set
The great start was keyed by five kills from Oliva Liddicoat and four from Katie Olson.
But the Cubans regrouped and tied it at 19-19 before going on a 6-3 run to take by match. Courtney Busch's five straight service points gave the edge to the Cubans.
The Panthers also had some good moments in the second set until the Cubans turned it up offensively.
"We just couldn't match their offense that well," Iowa-Grant coach Marla Simon said. "It was a match where things really turned and we didn't seem to have any confidence to play with them."
Stat leaders:
Kills - Olivia Liddicoat (11), Katie Olson (9)
Blocks - Annie Spurley (2)
Aces - Hero Klosterman, Katie Olson, Kendall Peterson (1)
Digs - Hero Klosterman (21), Olivia Liddicoat (11)
Assists - Kendall Peterson (24)
Thursday the Panthers forced Darlington to four sets before the Redbirds took the match.
The Panthers won the first set 25-23 then saw the Redbirds rebound to take the final three sets 25-23 25-22 and 25-14.
Stat Leaders:
Kills - Olivia (19), Shae McIntyre (5)
Blocks - none
Aces - Hero & Katie (3), Olivia (2)
Digs - Hero (18), Olivia (16), and Katie (11)
Assists - Kendall (31)
Simon was happy with how the Panthers started the match.
"We had a pretty good start but it was a battle the whole time," Simon said. "We didn't play that great, but still pulled off the win."
The rest of the night left a big question mark for the coach.
"I'm not sure what then happened," the coach said. "We just didn't seem to want to be there."
There were some high points for the Panthers, though.
"I thought Olivia Liddicoat really tried to keep us in it with her kills, but we just couldn't rally and show any enthusiasm," said Simon. "We struggled in serve receive and kind of let their one player, Kennedy Rankin, control the match."
The Panthers open tourney postseason play this week and hosted Ithaca Tuesday. (See results in this section)
"I am hoping we show better enthusiasm as we start into postseason. We have the skills but the enthusiasm needs to be a lot better," Simon said.
