Dodgers do the unthinkable - beat River Valley

For just the second time in their last 24 meetings, the Dodgeville volleyball team pulled off a win over River Valley. They did it in five sets after losing the first two and they did it before a Parent's and Senior Night crowd.
The Dodgers came out strong and held a 16-8 lead in game one, but the serving of Emily Briehl and Ali Hoffman got the Lady Blackhawks back in it and they took the win 25-18.
The second set went pretty much RV's way and resulted in a convincing 25-16 win.
But then the Dodgers evened things by consecutive 25-20 scores.
They were up 14-11 in game five, but a huge kill by the Lady Blackhawks had coach Dodger Scott Garthwaite wondering.
But, freshman Jo Jo Heimerl put the game away with a kill to the back corner that was just in bounds.
"In the last three, it was the best we had played all year," Garthwaite said. "Everybody was moving and was diving on the floor and we were talking. Everybody put their hits down - we started to block them. Everybody was picking up the ball - their (River Valley) shots weren't hitting the floor. The seniors didn't want to end their league season with a loss."
"Jo Jo was a key w 12 kills and only one miss,"the coach added. "In fact, our three freshmen (Jo Jo, Olivia Argall and Anna Ruhland) were big keys."
He also said about his seniors, "Ellie (Argall) played very good games and Maddison (Stumpf) is always consistent. Sara (Mae Polinag) and Alyssa (Belling) both played well in the back row."
Ellie Argall led in kills with13 while Heimerl had 12.
Kelsey Anderson, Ruhland, Grace Borne and Heimerl each blocked shots.
Stumpf aced five serves with Grace Borne adding two.
Stumpf led in assists at 22 while Grace Borne came up with 16.
Polinag and Ellie Argall both dug 18 shots.
For River Valley, Hoffman assisted in 17 points while Briehl served nine aces.
Gruber blocked two shots and had eight kills.
Carmen Hood led in kills with 10.
