Pointer girls solve River Valley for first win

Mineral Point senior Malorie Johnson jumped a pass that led toher team's first basket of the night and the Pointer girls basketball team finished with a 56-38 girls basketball non-conference win Tuesday, November 21.
"Against River Valley, we played much better than the last game," said Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright. "Our team defense created early scoring opportunities for us. Malorie Johnson jumped a pass that led to our first basket and then we created another turnover that resulted in a score."
He added, "Everyone shot the ball much better on Tuesday as every girl in the book (9) scored during the game."
Junior guard McKenna Reichling led all scorers with 15 points. She also had seven assists.
Malorie Johnson added nine points while her sophomore sister, Nicole, had seven markers and led in rebounds at eight. Senior Peyton Ross hit eight points.
River Valley 6' junior Riley Feiner led the Lady Blackhawks with 14 points. Sophomore Tienna Gruber added 10.
"It was nice to see us play our game, especially at home," Wainwright concluded.
"We struggled with turnovers in the first half after three straight empty possessions to start the game," said River Valley coach Brent Johnson.
The Blackhawks never recovered from the 9-0 early hole.
A two pointer after halftime pulled the Hawks within five but it was all Mineral Point after that.
"I thought we had some early looks that we need to find a way to finish," Johnson said. "We need to make them to be competitive. If you are not making shots you have to make sure you are not giving up easy points on the defensive end. That became our problem the last 10 minutes."
