Cardinals overcome Fennimore

The home cooking wasn't only done for Thanksgiving in Highland as the girls basketball teams found out Monday when both the JV and varsity recorded wins over Fennimore.
The JV started it with a 29-26 win then turned the home court over to the varsity. What followed was a consistent offense, a strong defense and some key board work at the varsity turned back the Golden Eagles 43-34 in the non-conference tilt.
Junior point guard Maddie Drury ran the show for the Cardinals and led the scoring with 17 points. Senior forward Kylie Esser added 11 as six girls scored.
When it came to a burst off the bench coach Josh Tarrell gave the nod to freshman Myah Hennessey who helped get possessions for the Cardinals and who Tarrell said, kept after it all night.
"Her motor never stops running," Tarrell said. "I was proud of her and how she played."
"Maddie did a good job running the show," Tarrell added. "She got some good looks and also had some nice assists."
"Kylie was an example of sticking with it when the shots are not dropping like she would like," Tarrell added. "She didn't quit and ended up in double figures."
"Defensively this was our best effort of the year so far," Tarrell added. "We got good help and we didn't let them get the offensive boards."
"It was back and forth for awhile but we held them off," Tarrell said.
Ashley Lang, a 5-9 junior, let Fennimore with 10 points.
The Cardinals host Cassville Friday with a 7 p.m. start as there is no jv game.
