March? Well, that's what happened last Friday around 5:45 p.m. in rural
Mineral Point. Then there was another one on Saturday in the
Barneveld/Arena area!

This Friday is the "Irish" holiday of St. Patrick's Day. St Patrick's Day
marks the life and deeds of St Patrick, one of Ireland's patron saints. It is an
Irish-American celebration in the USA. It falls on a Friday so the traditional
meal of Corned Beef 'n Cabbage will be off the menu for Catholics observing
Lent. But, there has been a change for this year allowing Catholics to eat the
traditional meal!

The Barneveld boys basketball team had a big second half Saturday night
to beat Hilbert and earn a trip to the Division 5 State Tournament this coming
weekend. Action for the tournament begins Thursday with Barneveld playing
the second game of the morning on Friday. Good luck to coach Jim Myers
and the Golden Eagles! See the photo above with the Barneveld Eagle Mascot
center stage in the crowd.

Southwestern Wisconsin will also be represented by Shullsburg and Darlington
at the state tournament. Shullsburg plays the first morning game on
Thursday in Division 5. If both Shullsburg and Barneveld win, they play each
other in the first game Saturday for the D5 championship! Darlington plays
the 6:35 game on Thursday night in Division 4.

It's pretty good for the area to have three teams competing at state!

Congratulations also to Kara Crowley, daughter of Larry and Karen Crowley.
She was a starter on the Beaver Dam girls basketball team that won the
gold. Kara played her first three years of high school basketball for the
Dodgers before the family moved to Beaver Dam as Larry is the pharmacist
there. Kara had a good state tournament!

I do have a little driving (walking) story that happened last week. Actually
I have two! The first one had me crossing the street by the Corner Drug Store
and three cars went by me without stopping. The first was a Wisconsin licensed
car, the next an IOWA licensed car and the third was a New York licensed
car - pretty good variations. The next day only one car didn't stop for
me and that one was licensed from New Hampshire. The next car was a Wisconsin
car and it stopped!

The Annual Grilled Cheese Championships will be held here at Harris Park
the 28th of April. That seems like a long time off, but really it isn't. If anyone
has a few minutes that day or the Thursday night before to help out with setup
or events going on that day, a call to the chamber of commerce (935-9200)
would be great!
