Pirates deny treasure for Eagles

The 56-52 loss to Fall River in the WIAA Division 5 Sectional semifinal at Evansville Thursday was not what bothered Barneveld coach Doug Pickarts the most.
It was another loss....the loss of four very quality seniors who ended their career at Golden Eagles--that is the biggest loss.
One of them---Mia Whitish---actually had her career ended over the holidays when her knee blew apart when she hit the Richland Center floor as the Eagles beat SWC champion Platteville.
"I feel bad for Mia not being able to finish her senior year," Pickarts said. "She is a real quality person."
She was also a four year starter and was a scoring, rebounding and leadership force.
Another of the girls playing their last game under Pickarts is his daughter, Teegan, who did all she could to carry the Eagles after Mia's injury.
"She is my daughter and coaching her is special," Pickarts said. "We have been together in this game for a long time. She averaged close to 17 points per game and while others stepped up when Mia had to stop playing, Teegan had to stay consistent all the time and carry us. Without the one-two punch we had when Mia and Teegan were together she had to do so much more for this team. She was our outside threat and ended up with 76 three pointers. She was always the focus of the defense and she had to work harder because of it. I am pretty proud of what she's done."
Also gone will be point guard Abigail Sutter who gave the Eagles a gutty performance every time out. She also had some huge scoring games and closed out her career with a 20 point effort against Fall River.
"She is a fun kid and a tremendous competitor," Pickarts said. "We will miss her leadership."
A fourth senior, Cecelia Murphy, saw action in several games and worked very hard all the time.
"Another great kid we will miss," Pickarts said.
"I hope they all enjoyed their time with Barneveld basketball."
Fall River had only one senior on the team and had two freshmen finish among their four double figure scorers. They had more size and length than the Eagles and were able to handle the ball against Barneveld's pressure.
One of the freshmen, 5-10 Sam Leisemann, led the Pirates with 15 points. Kaycee Bull, a 5-11 senior, added 13 while 5-9 junior Morgan Tranburg and 5-7 freshman Lexi Rozinski both had 12.
Sutter led the Eagles with 20 including all eight of her free throws. Teegan Pickarts added 13 with Courtney Skaife finishing with 11.
The Pirates skated to a 36-30 lead early in the second half but two baskets by Skaife and a jumper from the lane by Sutter cut it to 36-34.
Leisemann upped it to 38-34 with a basket off a steal but the Eagles fought back to tie it at 10:46. Taryn Pickarts scored off an out of bounds play at 11:43 for the 36th point before Teegan Pickarts put in a two pointer to tie the game.
The game stayed knotted when Bull and Sutter traded drives but the Pirates started to pull away with 7:29 left on baskets by Rozinski and Leisemann.
Sutter scored eight of Barneveld's last 10 points--Jessica Walker got the other two--but Leisemann, Rozinski and Tranburg accounted for 12 down the stretch for the win. A free throw by Leisemann and two by Tranburg sealed it.
"We gave up some points in transition, had some turnovers and didn't always finish our shots but the girls played very hard and left it out on the court," Pickarts added. "They had a very good year."
"I am very proud of them."
