Highland boys bow out at regional final

Highland, a #3 seed, gave it their all Saturday night against #2 Shullsburg, but fell four points short in a D5 boys basketball regional final that pitted two Six Rivers West teams.
The Miners, conference unbeaten at 12-0, found themselves trailing the Cardinals (conference runners-up) 27-26 at halftime.
Down the stretch, however, they held a 49-48 lead but with the Cardinals having the ball.
Highland coach Paul Wedig called a timeout and set up a set play. The shot though hit the backboard and fell off the rim.
"From there on out it was free throws for them," Wedig said.
"Our game plan was to pressure their perimeter shooters and front their inside players. The kids played it well," he added.
The Cards couldn't find an answer for Miner Hunter Matye however. The 6'5" post scored a game-high 24 points that included 9 of 10 free throws, many coming down the stretch.
"Matye had a big game. He had a lot of rebounds and he 6'5" and can jump," Wedig pointed out.
Shullsburg guard Noah Wand hit 17 points while another guard, Joseph Meyer added 10.
The Cardinals were paced by senior guard JR Linscheid, who finished his Cardinal career with 23 points.
Senior Bray Drury added 10 as did junior Mitchell Welsh.
"When we had to make big shots tonight, somebody stepped up whether is was John Ross, Spencer (Linscheid), Alex or Bray," Wedig said.
Playing their final game for Highland were: JR Linscheid, Bray Drury, Drew Drury (injured), Alex Michek and Ryan Minter.
