We have two girls regional basketball champions from our coverage area
as a result of last Saturday night's action. Mineral Point won in Division 4 in
a hard fought contest with Cuba City. Barneveld topped Rio in a not-so-hard
fought win in Division 5. They are the two teams we will be following next
week in Sectional play on Thursday night. Check out the Sport Pages for
complete results. Good luck to both teams on their quest to state!

Boys basketball playoffs began Tuesday night. Dodgeville doesn't play
until Friday night as does Mineral Point. Barneveld, Highland, Iowa-Grant,
Pecatonica and River Valley all played Tuesday. Good Luck to all remaining
teams!

Championships Friday night and Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids. In the order
they will be performing is on vault, bars, beam then finish on floor. Freshman
Miah Lemanski and Tessa Bockhop will be performing individually Saturday
in each event while junior Alyssa Belling will be a individual performing
bars and beam. River Valley junior Caroline Lausly will also be performing

basketball player Rachel Slaney. She has been named the North Central Community
College Conference (N4C) and Region IV co-Player of the Year for
2017. She is a sophomore playing for Madison College for her final year she
played her high school basketball at Barneveld.

The Dodgeville area and Wisconsin's entire tourist area suffered a huge
loss Wednesday night when the former Don Q Inn Restaurant burned to the
ground. It had also been the Log Inn, Sam & Maddies and Barn 23 - but it
will always be the Don Q (see above photo) to me. I remember the original
farm owner, Aldro Pengilly and wife Verna, the last owners of the 4 generation
Cornish farm. They were friends of my folks Guerdon and Ruby Reilly.
Both families raised hogs. Ours were purebred Hampshires while Aldro
raised Spotted Poland China hogs. I remember spending time at the farm as
a youngster. I remember two daughters, Jean and Charlotte. Jean died in 2015
at age 85. Charlotte has been in touch with me and is responsible for the
"Pengilly" stories that have appeared the past few weeks in the Dodgeville
Chronicle. She was very proud of the farm and the Don Q Inn. Another side
note is that my uncle, Merlin "Johnny" Reilly was a hired man on the
Pengilly farm before his wife became pregnant and they moved to Hialeah,
Florida. I write a lot about my cousin Jeanette, from Atlanta, who is their
daughter. Also, our aunt Lillian Kessler, gave a broken wooden airplane propeller
to Don Quinn to hang in the restaurant. He said he knew just where it
would go. I checked out the remains of the Don Q (barn) and it's devastating.
Don, with the help of Ron Dentinger, brought a lot of people to the area!
