Dodge-Point 4x800 takes 5th at state D2, several end careers there


A boys relay team from the Dodgeville-Mineral Point Track & Field team made the podium Friday with a fifth place finish in the 4x800.
That took place at the Division 2 state championships held at La Crosse.
The team consisting of Gerrit Bakker, Peyton Tranel, Henry Keith and Isaac Grunow ran an 8:03.03.
They finished behind winning Lakeland 7:55,16, Omro 7:55.87, Monroe 7:57.02 and Freedom 7:59.60.
The girls 4x200 relay team missed winning medals by one place, finishing sixth in 1:46.89.
Catholic Memorial won in 1:43.70, followed by Wittenberg-Birnamwood in 1:45.50, Milwaukee Lutheran in 1:45.50, Little Chute in 1:46.31 and Jefferson in 1:46.39.
The boys relay team of John Phelan, Kevin Eisenzimmer, Josh Shepler and Isaac Grunow finished 12th in the preliminaries with a time of 3:29.21 aand failed to make the finals.
The overall race was won by Freedom at 3:19.28 - just .24 off the state record.
Syd Staver competed as an individual for Dodge-Point in both the long jump and high jump.
She had a long jump of 17'1.75" to place eighth.
The winning leap was 18'6.5" by Hayward's Gabby Norder.
Staver took 10th in the high jump. last clearing the bar at 5'2". The bar just did fall to the ground in one of her attempts at 5'4".
The winner was Altoona's Mariah Hoepner with a jump of 5'5".
Richland Center's Madison Risner finished fourth clearing 5'4".
River Valley had a pair of Division 2 champions as Kyle Thomas won the 100 meters in 11.03 and Dustin Hatfield took the 1600 in 4:16.69.
Thomas ran a 10.94 in qualifying for the finals with the fastest preliminary run.
Hatfield edged Clarke Otto of Sheboygan Falls, who finished in 4:16.69.
Thomas was runner-up in the 200 meters with a time of 21.62. He was nipped at the wire by Kenneth Bednarek of Rice Lake who posted a time of 21.61.
Hatfield finished third in the other long distance race, the 3200. He posted a time of 9:28.49.
Their combined efforts just missed getting the school a runner-up plaque by one place (3rd).
Luke Bailey of Xavier won in 9:12.
In Division 3, Pecatonica/Argyle's Josie Penninson just missed a medal in the 400 meters. She took sixth with a time of 59.32 in an event won by Julianne Barkhole of Newman Catholic in 56.86.
Penninson qualified for the 200 finals with a run of 26.81 on Friday, but posted a 27.7 on Saturday to finish ninth.
Her junior teammate, Taetum Pagel, missed her three attempts at the 4'10" starting height in the high jump.

Barneveld athlete Brenden Ojibway competed in the male division of the wheelchair events, giving his Wisconsin Heights/Barn-eveld team third place overall with 27 points.
He took seconds in the 800 meters and the 1600 meters, third in the 400 meters and fourth in the shot put.
Chippewa Falls and Marquette University won with 36 points to Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld's 27 with Cuba City fourth at 25.
