Pointers eliminated by Shullsburg/Benton


Shullsburg/Benton sent seven runners across the plate in the second inning Tuesday and went on to eliminate Mineral Point in the Division 3 Regional semi-final 10-0.
The Miners added three more in the bottom of the fourth to end the game by the 10-run rule.
Jacob Berendes pitched the win and was aided by a flawless fielding performance.
Brant James took the loss for the Pointers.
Nathan Mowry and Alex Wand were 3x3 for the Miners. Mowry, Nathan Wedige, Hunter Matye and Chris Trejo all crushed doubles.
The Pointers managed four hits off Berendes, all singles which came from Justin Baehler, James, Cole Howard and Uriah Ottoway.
Matye had a two run double and Mowry a two run single to lead the seven run outburst in the S/B second. Wand also had a run scoring single in the big frame with two more coming on a bases loaded walk to Wedige and a sacrifice by Trejo.
Mowry and Trejo plated runs with doubles in the fourth and Wand made it a 10-run game with a single.

The Pointers opened their post season with a win over SWAL rival Cuba City, stunning the Cubans 9-6.
The game was tied at 2-2 after three innings with the Pointers scoring twice in the second and the Cubans twice in the third. The Pointers put the game away with a four run fourth then added three in the fifth.
The Pointers struck first with two runs in the second. Isaac Lindsey sent in one of the runs with a fielders choice and the other came in on an overthrow of a theft of third.
Cuba City answered on a double by Sean McVay and a single by Andy Clendenen.
With two outs in the fourth the Pointers got four runs. Uriah Ottoway had an 11 pitch at bat with an rbi double then Grady Gorgen and Brandon Dolphin both had rbi singles.
The Cubans answered with four in the top of the fifth to tie it at six.
The Pointers came back in the bottom of the fifth with enough runs to put the game away, 9-6.
Lindsey's single to right with two outs. Back to back singles by Cole Howard and Ottoway loaded the bases with one out. Gorgen's slow roller to third got a run when Lindsey broke hard to home and the third baseman threw to an uncovered first base. The runners kept going until the Cubans got Howard in a rundown that ended up 5-3-2-5.
Brant James came on in relief and fanned six of the seven batters he faced for the save.  Joey Dolphin got the start and exited after five innings after giving up five runs. He fanned four, walked two and spaced five hits. He got the decision.
Brandon Dolphin was 2x4 and Ottoway 2x3 to lead the Pointers. Both added a double to the Pointer attack.
