Pointer softball holds off Cubans


Mineral Point's softball team took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning and then had to hold off a charging Cuba City team for a 5-4 D 4 regional semi-final contest Wednesday, May 24.
The Pointers scored twice in the third as Morgan James grounded out with Miranda Oellerich, who had singled, scoring. Their second tally came as Lauren James doubled in Destinee Kruser, who had reached on an error.
They scored one more in the fourth on two errors, an Oellerich sacrifice and Rebekah Ottoway ground out.
Their fourth tally came in the fifth as Kruser reached the fence in left field for a home run.
An error, a walk and a hit by pitch then one swing of the bat tied it for Cuab City in the sixth. That swing for a grand slam home run and the Cubans first hit of the contest came off the bat of Kayla Busch.
They followed with two more hits, both singles by Jamie Droessler and Morgan Vosberg, but they were left stranded by a Dana Schmitz strikeout.
The winning run for the Pointers came in the bottom of the sixth on a Morgan James two out double the plated Oellerich, who had walked.
Schmitz retired the Cubans in order in the seventh to end it on a fly out, pop out and ground out.
Schmitz struck out four and walked three while allowing three hits and four runs in taking the win.
Cuba City's Kayla Busch was the loser going 2 2/3 innings. She allowed two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking two.
She relieved starter Kayla Stitch,who fanned one, walked one and gave up three unearned runs on three hits.
The five Pointers hits came on one each from Morgan James, Kruser, Lauren James, Schmitz and Oellerich.
Kruser and Oellerich both scored two runs while Kyla Lindsey crossed the plate once. The win moved the Pointers to the regional final at Wisconsin Heights.
