Pitchers dominate as Dodgers top Viroqua

It was a classic pitcher's battle Wednesday (May 24) as the Dodgeville softball team won a 1-0 Division 3 regional semifinal contest against visiting Viroqua. Murphy limited Viroqua to just two hits and she didn't walk anyone. Her team also didn't commit an error. She struck out seven.
Crystal Noble had a two-out double in the second inning and reached third base, but a strikeout stopped that threat.
Kaitlyn Holz singled with one out in the seventh, but was erased on an unassisted double play from Grace Borne to Ellie Argall.
The Dodgers didn't do much better off of Viroqua's Natalie Waldenberger. She allowed just three safeties and fanned seven and walked two.
Dodger Trilby Chitwood bunted for a base hit to lead off the seventh. She went to second on a wild pitch and then on to third on a bunt by Borne, who beat out the throw to first. Raven Mortimer then hit a grounder to third and Chitwood beat the throw home for the only run of the game.
Chitwood finished with two hits and Borne one.
"Most anyone at the game would tell you it was a great exciting game," said Dodger coach Gene Van Dyck. "Obviously it was a pitcher dominated game, but neither defense can be overlooked as neither committed an error. Grace Borne had a tremendous game at shortstop, but the play of the game wan an over-the-shoulder catch near the left field fence by Raven Mortimer on their lead-off batter in the top of the seventh. Their second batter collected their second hit of the game and Grace then scooped up a grounder near second base, stepped n the base and threw to first for a double play."
"We had a total of 10 batters reach base. It appeared that we may have scored in the second, but were called out on a fielder's choice tag play at home. "
"Lindsey had to be the player of the game as she saved her best game of the year for this game allowing only two hits for Viroqua's only two base runners. She basically dominated their hitters."
