Knights come up short in 15 inning game


The Dodgeville Knights ran out of luck in the 15th inning Monday when they couldn't answer two runs by the Verona Cavaliers and were forced to settle for a 5-3 Western Section Home Talent League loss.
David Luciana spent all 15 innings behind the plate but had enough left in the tank to slam a double that plated David Lund and Alex Olson and break a 3-3 tie in the top of the 15th. It all happened after two outs.
Lund singled on a 1-0 pitch and stole second. Olson was hit by a pitch then with one strike on him, Luciani delivered.
Luciani, who spent the past year with the Madison College baseball team, led the Cavs with a 3x6 day at the plate. Derek Burgenske was 2x7 with Lund getting their other hit.
The winning runs came off Bill Hellmann who relieved Danny Sullivan in the eighth. Instead of finishing the game in nine, Hellmann was forced to throw eight innings in his second extended action of the young season.
Sullivan gave up three hits and three runs, one earned, while walking three and striking out 11.
Hellmann gave up three hits, two runs while walking two and fanning three.
Verona scored first when John Monyaihan scored Klayton Brandt from third with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.
The Cavs added a run in the sixth when an error put Luciani on base. He advanced on another error and a walk then scored on a wild pitch.
The Knights scored their first run in the sixth. Trent Jones beat out an infield single and scored on a double by Jordan Larson. Larson had two doubles for the Knights and he and Austin Larson were both 2x6.
The Knights took the lead in the top of the eighth. Austin Larson singled, Jones reached on an error and Jordan Larson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Danny Sullivan's fielders choice sent in Austin Larson and Jones scored on a bases loaded walk to Levi Nagle.
Verona scored a run to knot up the game in the top of the ninth. Brandt walked, was balked to second and scored on an error.
Former Big 10 all-league shortstop with Michigan, Justin Scanlon, came on in relief and worked the last six innings, shutting out the Knights on one hit.
Kyle Nelson went the front nine for the Cavs, giving up five hits, three runs (one earned) with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Knights totaled eight hits, two each by the Larson brothers with one each from Jones, Danny Sullivan, Nate Michek and Hellmann,
The Knights are currently 1-3 in Western Section action. They host Hollandale Friday at 7 p.m. after playing Mazomanie Thursday at home in a Night League test.
