Staver hits 1000 points, Pointers top I-G

Syd Staver sank two free throws early in the game to give her 1000 points in her illustrious girls basketball career at Mineral Point High School. She exited the game at Iowa-Grant High School for the remainder of the first half with four points to a standing ovation from the Pointer fans.
Her teammates scored 39 more points in that first stanza with sophomore Mara Aschliman burrying a pair of three pointers and having 10 points. In all, nine Pointers scored in the first half as they held a 43-21 advantage.
Staver came back into the game the second half and finished with 15 points. Aschliman totaled 12 while junior Amanda Murphy chipped in 10, five in each half.
The final score stood Mineral Point 69 Iowa-Grant 33.
"We got off to a good start limiting the number of shots that IG was able to get and finding great scoring opportunities for ourselves, said Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright. "McKenna Reichling found the open girls right away and was able to get her own shots off with ease. Syd Staver reached the 1000 point milestone with a pair of free throws early in the first half."
He added, "Mara Aschliman and Amanda Murphy combined for 22 points coming off the bench. This was another good team win with everyone contributing to the team success with scoring coming from almost all girls and good intensity while playing. This is something to continue in each game."
Iowa-Grant freshman Olivia Liddicoat was the only Panther to have much success against the stifling Pointer defense. She finished the game with 15 points, driving the lane often. She made eight of nine free throws. Her sister, Emma, was next with six.
"Mineral Point is so good in transition that we wanted to make it a half court game. They are a special team when you let them go up and down the floor," said Iowa-Grant coach Craig Jenkins. "We spread things out on offense. I felt we have adequate ball handlers."
"Defensively we didn't have an answer for Reichling early on so we switched some things. We rotated well, but they passs well and we couldn't get out on Staver in time when she made her three pointers," he added.
"We prepared well and our effort was there in 4-5 minute stretches each half. We have to play a full 36 minutes though,' Jenkins said.
"Some of these girls on both teams have played with and against each other since third grade. I'm very proud of Syd and her accomplishments," the coach concluded.
