Stoughton shoots past Dodgers

For most boys basketball teams scoring 35 points in one half isn't bad, but Thursday night for Dodgeville, it left them with a 27-point loss.
What did Division 2 5th ranked Stoughton do to the Dodgers in the first half? They only buried 13 three pointers - finishing with 16 on the night - and used great transition offense for that 62-35 lead. That resulted into a 93-51 win for the Vikings.
"It was a shooting performance I had not seen in that first half. Not all of those shots were uncontested either," said Dodgeville coach Matt McGraw following the loss.
Stoughton junior Max Fernholz created most of that first-half offense as he hit eight treys on his way to scoring a total of 27 points for the game, all coming from long range.
Fernholz's father was once a Dodgeville School District teacher, who coincidentally was one of Coach McGraw's teachers. He also helped in the basketball and baseball coaching programs during his time here.
Senior Viking teammate Troy Slaby nailed five threes and finished with a game-high 30 points, several in transition.
Several times the Vikings would pull down a defensive rebound and two players would be across half court for an outlet pass as the ball was being pulled down.
"We knew about Slaby, but Fernholz came out of almost nowhere at us," McGraw pointed out.
"Their pressure gave us trouble," he added. "Their defense oriented their offense - it was a challenge for us to make a pass at times let alone get a shot off. We had way too many turnovers and bad decisions. We can't allow the other team to dictate what we do."
Besides the two high scorers for Stoughton, 10 players scored with junior Jordan DiBenedetto hitting 13.
The Dodgers kept with them somewhat in the first half with their 35 points, led by junior Bryce Prochaska's 11 points and senior Houston Stanek's 10.
Stanek led the Dodgers in scoring with 18 points. Prochaska finished the night with 13 and was in foul trouble a good share of period two.
