Pickarts, Whitish key Eagles' second victory run

Facing one of the SWC favorites was no doubt a challenge the Barneveld girls basketball team wanted to have go their way.
In the end, it did.
After two halves of physical basketball the Golden Eagles put Platteville, a big, young SWC team away, 59-46, with some deadly long range shooting and a lesson in how to shoot free throws
It wasn't that way early as both teams traded baskets until halftime with the Lady Hillmen holding a one point lead, 21-20.
It stayed close the second half until the score reached a 36-all deadlock before the Eagles reeled off nine quick points including a three point play by Mia Whitish.
It was Whitish and Teegen Pickarts who led the second half run. Pickarts had 16 or her game high 27 the second 18 minutes including a trio of three pointers and seven of 10 free throws as Platteville had to foul to try for the ball. All of her field goals were from three point range as she nailed three each half.
Whitish had 15 points the second half but left early with seven and a half minutes remaining with a knee injury from a fall to the court. She finished with 21 points.
The slow start was the result of settling, according to Barneveld coach Doug Pickarts.
"We settled for shots we should not be taking," Pickarts said. "We weren't getting into our offense and forcing them to work. I was not happy with our shot selection."
The bigger Lady Hillmen were also getting the upper hand when it came to rebounds.
But the second half eventually saw everything the Eagles needed to get done come together.
"We took better shots, played better defense and evened up the boardwork," Pickarts said. "Also, Teegan and Mia really took over."
Izzy Carroll, a 5-10 freshman, and Skye Digman, a 6-0 junior, both scored 13 points to key Platteville.
Facing the possibility of not having Whitish when the Eagles play Richland Center (yesterday--too late for paper) they will have played the top two SWC teams on back to back days. Richland Center beat SWAL  leading Mineral Point 70-55 Tuesday.
