Panthers learn against a SWAL power

Iowa-Grant's girls basketball team used their SWAL match-up with Riverdale as a learning experience, hoping it pays off in the long run.
"We did some things to get us ready for the post season," coach Craig Jenkins said.
The Panthers also battled hard, even when a Riverdale run before halftime sent the game in their favor. The Chieftains finished the SWAL season with a 61-37 win over the Panthers and remain ranked in the girls Division 4 basketball poll.
One of the goals for the Panthers was slowing down McKenzie Couey who is one of Riverdale's top scorers. With Kassidy Schroeder using her defensive wizardry Couey could only manage eight points.
But the Chieftains showed they have other weapons.
Macey Klebesadel shook off a strong defensive effort from Maddie Harmening to score 19 points. She led the second half 31-21 outburst with 12.
Autumn Noble also helped the Riverdale scoring with 14 points.
Iowa-Grant freshman Olivia Liddicoat made the most of her three point shooting, drilling a trio of them for a 12 point night to lead the Panthers. Schroeder also lit the nets for a pair of threes in the first half.
The Panthers were patient with the ball and were centered on sharing it which resulted in eight players entering the scoring column.
"We are getting more healthy and are getting our work in with our rotations," Jenkins said.
Riverdale started to pull away with a six point run late in the opening stanza.
"We got tired and had to sub," Jenkins said. "We lost the ball with three turnovers late in the first half and found ourselves down 14 at halftime."
After that it was a valiant effort trying to erase a 15 point Riverdale advantage most of the time.
"We played tough," Jenkins said. "But they played better."
