Top team crossover win goes to Eagles

It was to be a classic battle between #1 and #7. It was the Six Rivers boys basketball crossover between the East and West. It was at the site of the East.
That was the scene of Division 5 and unbeaten #1 Shullsburg travelling to #7 and twice beaten Barneveld. Barneveld's losses had come to D4 power Darlington and D3 power Prairie du Chien.
The game started out as billed with the teams basically trading points. Eagle Malcom Reed it a three to open scoring and Miner Hunter Matye nailed a jumper to make it 3-2.
But midway in period one, the Eagles started getting steals, were making shots and getting to the free throw line. That resulted in them holding a 28-15 lead at halftime.
"Our thought was to make them work hard and dribble the ball instead of letting them pass over us," said Barneveld coach Jim Myers. "We needed to have quick hands inside and block the passing lanes. I think that unnerved them. Our kids ran our game plan to a T. All the guys were focused and played well.
Barneveld kept up that lead, with Shullsburg getting close to a single digit deficit, but not quite making it down that far.
The final score stood Barneveld 57 Shullsburg 36.
Eagle senior Matthew Myers led all scorers with a 23 point output. He hit the three four times and slashed to the basket regularly He hit 10 points in the first half and had a trio of threes in the second.
Fellow senior Mike Zouski added 13 to the cause. He also nailed one from downtown and had several rebound put-backs.
Matthew needed to step up tonight and he did. He not only scored, but he got the ball to others regularly," coach Myers pointed out. "The key on offense was our discipline. We didn't take the quick shot tonight and didn't get rattled."
"Before the game I told the kids - hoe many times can you have #1 in the state come into your gym?," Myers concluded.
Shullsburg was led in scoring by Matye, who hit 11 points. Joey Meyer scored eight in the second half and finished with 10.
