Great matches; Fennimore wins CLASH
When the mats were cleared following the featured match of the day at 145 lbs Fennimore (SWAL) edged River Valley (SWC) as the overall champion by four points 296-292 with 13 teams competing.
Mineral Point was third at 239 with Iowa-Grant/Highland fourth and Dodgeville seventh - out of the 13 teams.
That featured match of the day may've decided the team champion as Fennimore's Justin Tollefson edged River Valley's Gavin Wipperfurth 5-3 in overtime.
River Valley claimed crowns at 132 in Zach Licht and 172 in Elijah Alt.
Iowa-Grant/Highland's Max Maylor (152), Sawyer Sarbacker (120) and Drew Hennessey (182) all won titles.
"The clash is always a great tournament with tough competition and I was proud of the team for taking 4th," said I-G/Highland coach Ryan Allen. "The four guys in the finals really went after it this weekend and wrestled well. To have 3 conference champs is a tribute to their hard work."
About some of his wrestlers Alen said, "Brady wrestled hard and had Alt on the ropes in the finals but just couldn't finish him off. I hope Brady can learn from this match and move forward.
"Sawyer looked very tough again. His offense is looking good and he just needs keep focused and score points.
"Max was also very dominate. He needs to keep focusing on the small things to prepare for the next few weeks.
"Drew has been wresting very smart and I look forward watching him compete in the next few weeks. He really seems to be getting hot at the right time.
"Also, congrats to Keegan Pilling on being crowned a jv conference champ. He has worked his tail off and I couldn't be more proud of him."
Mineral Point's Riley Workman surprised the #1 ranked D2 wrestler, Shane Liegel of River Valley, 9-6 for the 170 lb. championship. Pointer Danny Pittz emerged the 106 lb. title holder.
"It was great to see Riley get the Most Outstanding Wrester award. He deserved it," said Pointer coach Scott Schmitz. "Overall I thought we wrestled pretty well."
"We had 12 wrestlers place and that geve us some good team points," he added.
He pointed to three wrestlers who scored some valuable points in Mitchell Schaaf, 4th at 126; Sawyer Wallace, 5th at 170; and Kaleb Pilling, 5th at 182.
"Kyle Juedes lost a tough match in the semifinals and finished 5th," Schmitz pointed out. "Boone Schmitz was probably in the toughest class and took 3rd at 145."
The Pointers, along with Iowa-Grant/Highland, travel to Riverdale for regionals Saturday where they face a lot of these same teams.
Dodgeville's Shelby Jones edged the #10 ranked heavyweight (CC/SW/Benton's Aaron McCar-thy) in the semifinals and won the championship at 285.
Dodgeville coach Ryan Lord taked about the meet, "We went into the Clash pretty thin. We knew going in that we did not have wrestlers at 120 and 182 and Jonathon Geisking missed the tournament due to illness in addition to Max Miller still not able to wrestle due to a shoulder injury.
"There are always some matches that we feel we should have won, but I thought as a team we probably wrestled the best we have all season and we are peaking at the right time. The Clash is an outstanding tournament filled with a lot of highly ranked teams and individuals, so I was thrilled to have a champion and several high place winners.
"Shelby Jones wrestled a great tournament and avenged an early season loss to defending Clash champion and #10 ranked Aaron McCarthy in the semi-finals. Shelby then defeated Fennimore's Devin O'Brien in the finals (ranked #4 in D3) by a score of 4-1. John Phelan finished as a Clash runner-up for the second year in a row. Even though John lost to an extremely impressive wrestler in Max Maylor, John is wrestling extremely well right now. Isaac Grunow and Zack Weber each placed third. Isaac gave up a couple of big moves in the semi-finals, but has been outstanding lately. Zack is finally starting to feel healthy after battling back and ankle injuries for most of the year and is starting regain his form. Joey Recob finished with a 4th place finish. Joey has been wrestling extremely tough and aggressive, and I believe he is going to have a great tournament series starting this week. Tanner Bell placed 5th with 4 wins and one loss on the day. He showed a lot of toughness by wrestling through an injured shoulder. His 5th place match was a scoreless match until Tanner was able to score a 3 point near fall late in the third period. Riley Crook won his first match of the day and placed 8th in a bracket that featured four ranked wrestlers. Riley has shown steady improvement lately and it was good to see him earn a placement.
"Other Dodger participants in the Clash included Dylan Roen, Hank Dougherty and Jarek Hlavac. Preceding the Clash tournament was the JV Clash. Michael Mikrut placed 1st while Cesar Hernandez and Tyler Bell each placed 2nd."
The Dodgers are at River Valley and will face the Blackhawks plus many of the other D2 teams from the CLASH for regionals.
