Redbirds slip past Pointers

Back to Back SWAL Conference Champions Darlington Redbirds outlasted the Pointers 3-2 Thursday night thanks to a three run fifth inning.
The fifth for the Redbirds started with a single from Bailey McGuire. Christian Carr reached on error, Nick Andrae struck out swinging, Nick Banfield sacrifice bunted and Brayden McDonald followed with a two run single. Ryan Glendenning then singled in McDonald.
Besides that fifth inning, Pointer hurler Joey Dolphin was in command most the game. He scattered seven hits while walking none and striking out five while going the distance.
The Pointers scored one in the second when Joey Dolphin singled, Curtis Cox reached on an error, Isaac Lindsey walked and Grady Gorgen was hit by a pitch. They scored again in the third when Brant James doubled and Cox singled him in.
The Pointers also had seven hits as Cox finished 2x3, Cole Howard, Justin Baehler, Brant James and Joey Dolphin all collected hits.
Chad Gollackson got the win for the Redbirds while Ryan Glendenning came on for the save.
"I thought we played extremely well for six plus innings tonight," said Pointer coach Jordan Tibbits. "Joey was in great command of his pitches and a few hits later we were down just like that. We just left too many runners on. Against teams like Darlington, you have to capitalize on those. Joey pitched well and Curtis had a good night at the plate. This is another game that will help mature our younger guys."
