Cardinals top Shullsburg/Benton in key game

JR Linscheid did a little bit of everything to help Highland score a 2-1 win over Shullsburg/Benton in a Six Rivers West game Tuesday.
It was a battle between two teams ranked in the WBCA, Shulls-burg/Benton in Division 3 and Highland in Division 4.
It was also an early season match-up for first place.
JR worked 6 2/3 before giving way to the new pitch count rule. He gave up two hits and the one run S/B got off him was unearned. He fanned nine and walked two while taking a perfect game into the fifth.
Spencer Linscheid came on in relief and got the inning over by inducing a fly out. He came back out in the seventh and struck out the side.
Both teams scored a run in the fifth. Highland broke the tie and scored the winning run in the seventh.
Highland got its first run in the top of the fifth when Spencer Linscheid reached with two outs and scored when Drew Hennessey drove the ball deep and off the fence.
Shullsburg/Benton responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when Hunter Mayte walked and got to third on a botched pick-off attempt. Chris Trejo then squeezed him in.
Mitchell Welsh then drove home the winning run. JR walked, stole second and third then scored when Welsh's liner just cleared the shortstop's glove.
The Cardinals had runners on every inning but could not score.
"We played good defense behind our pitchers," Highland coach Terry Cool said. "It was a very good high school baseball game."
Welsh and Hennessey were both 2x3. Alex Michek and Bray Drury both had one hit for the Cardinals.
