Dodgers get River Valley, first over Hawks in 20

There have been at least 20 meetings between the Dodgeville and River Valley SWC volleyball teams that the Blackhawks have claimed as a win.
That streak likely started before this year's Dodgers reached high school and took the varsity court.
So, the fact the young Dodgers tripped up the previously unbeaten Blackhawks 3-2 Thursday made the pandemonium that took place in the Dodgeville gym was worth it.
The first two sets made it appear like it was business as usual for the Blackhawks as they cruised to a pair of wins, 25-17, 25-12.
But then it happened. The young Dodgers, let by senior Katie Valeria, got that look in their eye and the needed rush to the heart.
That translated into wins in the last three sets, 25-23, 25-23 and a squeaker 16-14 in the final set.
The final set saw the Blackhawks rebound from a 14-11 deficit to tie the match at 14 all prompting Dodgeville coach Scott Garthwaite to take a time out. But as the girls approached the bench for some correction talk he noticed something.
"They were as calm as I have ever seen them," Garthwaite said.
And when they went back to the court they translated that calmness into outlasting the Hawks for the win.
Garthwaite said three things happened in the match that helped the Dodgers earn the win.
"We got more aggressive," the coach said. "We hustled and we didn't miss ours serves."
Another key was the confidence.
"I felt after we got the win in the third set the girls knew they could do it," said Garthwaite.
In the third set the Dodgers took a page from the River Valley playbook and put on the pressure.
"They did not respond well to that," Garthwaite said.
After the win in the fourth game the girls seemed to know that a win was in reach, Garthwaite said.
It helped that Valeria dominated the net with 19 kills and Macy Swiggum stepped up her game with eight kills. Ellie Argall added five and Kelsey Anderson four.
Valeria served five aces with Molly Latterell and Marissa Parkin serving two each.
Three Dodgers, Valeria, Parkin and Lily Durst, all had 10 digs.
Parkin was the assist leader with 31.
Carly Fleming was the kills leader for the Blackhawks with 11. Sierra Schwingle added nine, Taylor Briehl eight with Tienna Gruber and Emily Briehl getting seven.
Carmen Hood and Alyssa Esser both had five aces with Taylor Briehl adding four.
Taylor Briehl and Gruber both had two blocks with Schwingle, Emily Briehl and Fleming adding one each.
Hood was the was the digs leader with 22 with Alyssa Esser and Taylor Briehl adding eight.
Taylor Briehl led in assists with 29.
Monday's match with Mount Horeb was completely different from the River Valley clash. The Dodgers lost 25-14, 25-12 and 25-13.
"We got outhustled and played with very little emotion," Garthwaite said. "The girls need to learn that hustle and determination does not always do it," he added. "You need to also be in the right place. Good teams figured that out."
Valeria had eight kills, a block and seven digs. Parkin had 11 assists while Latterell and Lily Durst both had two aces.
Last week the Blackhawks eased past Lancaster 25-15, 25-15, 25-4.
Kills were spread out with Gruber getting nine, Taylor Briehl seven, Schwingle and Emily Briehl six with Fleming adding five.
Gruber was strong at the net with five blocks and Taylor Briehl adding four.
The Hawks served up 12 aces with Esser getting four, Taylor Briehl and Hood three with Emily Briehl adding two.
Taylor Briehl put up 20 assists.
Hood and Taylor Briehl both had nine digs with Emily Briehl adding six.
