Dodgers see tough teams in SWC, tourney

Dodgeville's volleyball team has moved into fourth place in the SWC with a convincing win over Prairie du Chien Tuesday.
It was a breakout performance by Katie Valeria who was dominating for lack of a better description.
All the senior hitter did was pound down 24 kills, two blocks and serve nine aces.
Kelsey Anderson also was on fire at the nest with two blocks.
Marissa Parkin put up 28 assists and Sarah Polinag had 14 digs.
Scores were 25-17, 25-18 and 25-14.
The Dodgers cruised to a 7-0 lead in the first set but the Prairie Hawks came back to tighten things up. After some back and forth volleys the Dodgers finished strong.
"We just put it away," coach Scott Garthwaite said. "It got interesting for awhile."
The second set was another back and forth battle and was tied at 18.
But Valeria got hot again and helped the Dodgers put it away.
Game three was a cruiser for them and Valaria again was too tough for the Prairie Hawks.
Saturday the Dodgers battled their way to third place at the Iowa-Grant Tournament, playing some very good volleyball on the way.
The Dodgers played without hitter Ellie Argall so Garthwaite experimented with some different combinations.
The Dodgers opened with Highland and beat the Cardinals 25-16, 26-24.
Valeria had 13 kills and two blocks. Cortney Grady and Parkin served aces and Parkin had 19 assists.
Polinag had 16 digs, Lily Durst 11 and Alyssa Belling 10.
"We served well, passed well and had minimal mistakes," Garthwaite said. "A couple of hitting errors kept us from dominating,"
The Dodgers also swept New Glarus in two, dominating 25-9, 25-4.
Valeria had 11 kills and six blocks.
Parkin served four aces and Maci Swiggum three.
Parkin and Valeria both had six digs and Parkin had a dozen assists.
"We played as well as we have all season," Garthwaite said. "In our second win New Glarus had a hard time getting the ball over the net."
After a 45 minute wait the Dodgers played Iowa-Grant and lost to the Panthers 20-25, 19-25.
Valeria had 11 kills and a block. Anderson added three blocks.
Swiggum served a pair of aces and Durst had six digs.
"They were scrappy," Garthwaite said about the Panthers. "We couldn't get any runs going and we had too many dig errors. But, in the end we played them pretty close."
The Dodgers then lost to Mineral Point 2-0. Scores were 25-16, 25-15.
Valeria had seven kills and Anderson had a block.
Valeria and Swiggum both had an ace.
Durst had seven digs.
"They are a nice team," Garthwaite said about the Pointers. "We didn't match up and had 23 digging errors. We stopped being in the right place."
The loss put the Dodgers into the third place game with Belleville which ended up 2-1 in Dodgeville's favor.
Scores were 20-25, 25-19, 15-11.
Valeria had 16 kills a block and two aces. Parkin also had a pair of aces and 20 assists. Poling had 12 digs with Swiggum, Parkin and Valeria getting nine each.
"Belleville had beaten us earlier in the season and that isn't usually good for us but we came out, served well and only missed two serves all match," Garthwaite said.
"We were able to use some different combinations which will help us down the stretch," said Garthwaite.
Last Thursday the Dodgers lost to Platteville in four games. Scores were 25-22, 20-25, 11-25, 17-25.
Valeria had 15 kills and Argall added six. Valeria had four aces, Argall three with Parkin, Belling and Swiggum getting one each.
Valeria was a block star for the night with seven.
Durst had nine digs, with Argall getting 11 and Swiggum 10.
Parkin had 22 assists.
"We came out and took it to them," Garthwaite said about the first game win. "Then the wheels came off and we never recovered."
"I don't know what caused the let down but we do know we can compete with them next time," Garthwaite said.
The Dodgers host a pair of area powers with River Valley here Thursday and Mount Horeb here Monday.
