Cardinals take care of Shullsburg, Potosi

Taking a cue from Yogi Berra, Highland volleyball coach Maria Wineski created her own "Maria-ism" after a win over Shullsburg Monday.
She didn't say "it isn't over until it is over." Rather she said, "When we play well, we play well."
That about sums if up for the Cardinals who used an outstanding team effort to get past a tough Lady Miners team 3-2 in a Six Rivers West game. Scores were 20-25, 25-15, 26-28, 25-13 and 15-11.
The win over the Lady Miners puts the Cardinals in third place in the SRW behind leader Benton and second place River Ridge. The Cardinals are 3-3 heading into Thursday's home match with Belmont.
Wineski had high praise for the improved play of libero Brooke Michek.
"She is doing a good job helping us get on the right track," said Wineski. "She is dependable, consistent and playing well."
Michek contributed 25 digs and an ace in the Cardinal win.
Kylie Esser had a strong night at the net and all around with 17 kills and 14 digs. Jessica Kosharek was another standout for the Cardinals with 15 kills, 19 digs, two blocks and two aces.
"She was all over the place," Wineski said about Kosharek. "She needs to do that for us to win. She really hustles."
Karen McMannes had 38 assists, three aces and 19 digs.
"She did a great job," said Wineski.
Alyx Hach was also tough at the net and did a good job negating Shullsburg's 6-1 middle blocker. She had five blocks.
"She did a good job," said Wineski.
The Cardinals coach also credited Morgan Kosharek with a strong night playing in the back row and serving five aces.
"We tweaked our defense a little and it seemed to work," Wineski said.
"It was a big team effort," she added. "Everyone did a good job."
Last Thursday the Cardinals got their second SRW win of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Potosi.
Scores were 25-20, 25-13, 25-15.
Esser and Kosharek both had nine kills with Hach contributing eight kills, three blocks and four aces.
Michek had eight digs and served five aces.
McMannes put up 29 assists and served four aces.
"We played well and there were not many volleys," Wineski said.
The Cardinals have reached the halfway point of the season.
