Along the Ad Routes

What a great day for the Dodgeville Area Scholarship Foundation and its
annual golf outing at Dodge Point Country Club on Sunday. The weather was
near perfect. In fact, a few people said it got a little warm near the end of
their round. We had 138 golfers - one team said they couldn't come at the
last minute, as did two golfers from two different teams. We had a team on
the waiting list, but Sunday morning was too late for them to pull everyone
together to make it a full 36 teams - but 35 teams isn't bad!
*****
The team of (above left to right) Dave Cayler, Kevin Meudt, Brian Bowers
and Mitch Bowers was the overall winner of the best ball scramble, shooting
a 56, which I think is a record for the DASFI event. We also had three other
flight team winners plus gave away a bunch of door prizes for long drive,
closest to the pin, long putt and things like that. Dodgeville High School Golf
Coach Jeff Bradley won the closest to the pin on hole #18 in the "Chuck's"
(Halverson) Challenge of everyone making it on the green. There were 35
who hit the green on a different par 3 who earned the right to try for the grand
prize after the rounds were done.

One of the big parts of the event comes at the end when the famous
"Kathryn McGraw" pies are auctioned off. Since Kathryn passed away, her
granddaughter - Lori McKinlay - has taken over baking the pies. I think the
highest pie purchased was $800 by the DHS Class of 1965 and the lowest
may have been $200. It's always a lot of fun bidding those pies up just like
you do at livestock auctions!

The DHS Class of 1966 held their 50th reunion Saturday night and I had a
chance to visit with a good share of those at Dodge Point that night when I
took their class photo. They also had a team play Sunday - Marcia Metcalf,
Sonja Chamberlain, Tom Marten and Steve Larson. Several others came out
to the DASFI event and talked with a lot of people they hadn't seen for years!
*****
There's a 1st Annual Packer Run & Tailgate for HOPE (Helping Others
Persevere Everywhere) this Sunday at Harris Park inside Ley Pavilion. The
run/walk starts at 10:30 a.m. with tailgating from 11:30-noon with the Green
Bay Packers taking on the Detroit Lions at noon - watch it on the Big Screen
there. It sounds like a fun day for all ages with a 1K kids run, a 5K run plus
a Packer costume contest!
*****
Highland will hold its first ever High School Hall of Fame banquet on
Thursday, September 29. There will be several inducted.
*****
Dodgeville's High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction will be homecoming
night, October 7th at the Dodger Bowl. Inductees will be featured in
the parade, at halftime of the football game and afterwards at a special reception
when plaques will be presented.

My "late buddy" Mike Crubaugh, former owner of the "Not So" Quality
Bakery in downtown Dodgeville, would've loved what his brother John tried
to pull Sunday at the DASFI golf outing. John admitted he was the scorekeeper
from his group and turned in the wrong score. He didn't add up the
total on the back nine correctly. The scorecard wasn't signed, so we didn't
disqualify the team. Oh, and did I say he is a former educator! John tried to
say he thought that the back nine was a par 35 when it was a par 36 and he
just subtracted three from the "35" since he knew they were three under par!
He took a math shortcut!
